What is the 33% rule for solar panels?

It appears in People Also Ask and in a lot of AI answers. It does not appear in any manufacturer warranty document we have read. Here is what people are usually reaching for, and the numbers that actually decide a solar claim.

There is no 33% rule in any solar warranty document we have read. It is not a manufacturer term, it is not in the warranty conditions of the nineteen brands in this catalogue, and no manufacturer we have checked measures a claim against 33% of anything. If somebody has quoted it at you as the reason your claim fails, ask them which document it comes from.

Why the question keeps coming up

"What is the 33% rule for solar panels" sits in the People Also Ask box on solar warranty searches. Once a question is in that box it gets answered, over and over, by pages competing for the click. Answer engines then read those pages and repeat them back with total confidence. A question that nobody could source becomes a rule that everybody cites.

We are not going to add to that. We do not know where the phrase started, and we are not going to invent a provenance for it. What we can tell you is what it is not, and what you are probably actually trying to find out.

Things people are usually asking when they ask this

In our experience the question is standing in for one of four real ones.

"How much can my panels drop off before I can claim?" This is a performance warranty question, and it has a real answer. A performance warranty is a promise about output over time, expressed as a percentage of the panel's rated output at particular years. The exact curve is different for every panel model, and it is written into that model's warranty document. That is a number you can look up. It is not 33%, and it is not the same for your neighbour's panels.

"How much of my roof or my bill should solar cover?" A sizing question, not a warranty question. It depends on your usage, your roof, your tariff and your export rules. Nothing in a warranty document speaks to it.

"Is there a limit on how much solar I can connect?" Electrical codes and network rules do contain percentage limits on what can be connected to a given board or a given supply. Which one applies to you depends on your jurisdiction and your switchboard, and your electrician or your network operator is the right person to ask. Whatever that number turns out to be, it has nothing to do with whether a manufacturer honours a warranty.

"Am I entitled to a rebate or a credit?" Incentive programmes are quoted in percentages and they change. They are not warranty terms and we do not track them.

If any of those was the real question, the answer is in a different document to the one you were pointed at.

Real percentages do exist. They are just not this one.

Percentages are all over solar warranty documents. They are simply attached to output and capacity, not to some universal rule.

Two examples from documents we have read. FranklinWH promises 70 percent capacity retention at the end of the term on aPower 2 and aPower S, which are 15 year products. Canadian Solar carries 25 years of product cover and 30 years of performance cover on the current TOPHiKu6 residential modules. Silfab's performance warranty runs 30 years whether the install was registered or not, even though the product warranty depends entirely on that registration.

Those numbers are specific to a product line and a market. That is what a real warranty percentage looks like: narrow, sourced, and different for the unit next door.

The numbers that do decide a solar warranty claim

Not one of those is a rule of thumb. Each is a specific sentence in a specific document, and each one changes what you are owed.

What actually gets claims refused

Across the brands in this catalogue, the recurring reasons are boring and none of them are percentages.

  • The term started earlier than the homeowner thought. Several brands start the clock at delivery, at shipment, or a fixed number of months after manufacture, whichever comes first. Stock that sat in a warehouse burns cover before anyone switches it on.
  • A condition was quietly broken. GoodWe needs a live SEMS connection. Tesla needs a Powerwall that stays online. REC ProTrust only exists if a certified installer registered the installation. Nobody is notified when one of these fails.
  • A registration was never done. Only three brands here have a dated window at all, but where one exists, missing it is expensive.
  • The paperwork is gone. No serial number, no install date, no invoice, no claim. This is by far the most common one.

How to check a rule somebody quotes at you

This works for the 33% rule and for anything else.

  1. Ask which document it is in. A real warranty term has a document, a version and a page. "It is industry standard" is not a source.
  2. Get the document for your exact model. Terms differ between product lines from the same manufacturer, and between markets. The document for the panel on your roof is the only one that binds anybody.
  3. Check the date. Manufacturers revise these. The version that applies is usually the one current when you bought.
  4. Read the conditions section, not the headline. The years on the brochure are the best case. The conditions section is where the real term lives.

So what should you do instead

If you came here worried that some percentage rule is about to cost you a claim, spend the next twenty minutes on the things that genuinely will.

Find the serial numbers and the install date. Find the invoice. Then run your brand through the warranty deadline calculator and see whether there is a clock or a condition attached to what you own. If something has already lapsed, you would rather know now than on the day the inverter dies.

That is a worse answer than a neat rule with a number in it. It is also the true one.
