Installer, customer, auto: the three registration routes and how each one fails
Solar warranty registration happens one of three ways: you do it, the homeowner does it, or a commissioning app does it. Each route fails differently, and the automatic one fails most quietly.

Warranty registration happens one of three ways. You register the unit, the homeowner registers it, or a commissioning app registers it without anyone deciding to. Each route fails differently. The installer route fails when someone is busy. The customer route fails because nobody chases. The automatic route fails silently, because everyone assumes it worked and nobody ever looks.
Why the route matters more than the deadline
Most people think of warranty registration as a deadline problem. Across nineteen brands checked against their own published documents, only three carry a real dated window: Fronius at 30 months from delivery ex works, Silfab at 180 days from purchase, and EG4 at one year from purchase.
The other sixteen have no countdown at all. What they have instead is a route, and eleven of them have conditions that must stay true. So the operational question is almost never "how long do I have". It is "whose hand is on this, and how would I know if it never happened".
That is what the route field is for.
Route one: you register it
Fifteen of the nineteen brands sit here. The manufacturer expects the installing company to submit the details, through a portal, with a set of fields you have to have captured on site.
The failure mode is boring: it does not happen. The job closes, the technician is on the next roof, the office assumes the technician did it, and the registration sits in nobody's queue. Nothing goes wrong that day. Nothing goes wrong for years. Then a part fails and the claim asks for something that was never filed.
Two examples where the cost is precise:
- Silfab product warranty is 12 years from delivery, extended to 25 years when the installation, site and product details are registered through Silfab's portal within 180 days of purchase. The performance warranty runs 30 years either way. Missing the window costs 13 years of product cover on that array.
- Fronius gives a free 10 year Warranty Plus for registering in Solar.web within 30 months of delivery ex works, and registering also moves the start of cover from delivery to commissioning. Skip it and you lose the extension and the later start date at once.
How to stop it failing. Registration has to be a state on the job, not a task in someone's head. Nothing closes until the confirmation number exists. If the portal is down, the job stays open. This is unglamorous and it is the entire fix.
A wrinkle worth knowing about this route
Several brands on the installer route have no registration to perform at all. Jinko, Trina, LONGi, Q CELLS, BYD and Canadian Solar publish no registration requirement in the documents that were checked.
That sounds like less work and it is a different kind of trap. When there is nothing to submit, there is also nothing that creates a record, so the only thing standing between you and a denied claim in year nine is the paperwork you kept. BYD is the sharp example. There is no registration anywhere, but without a written delivery note the ten years runs from six months after production rather than delivery plus 30 days, which quietly burns months of cover. Trina runs from installation or three months after delivery, whichever comes first. Jinko runs from delivery or 180 days after manufacture, whichever is earlier, and a claim wants the warranty certificate plus the purchase and installation invoices.
For these brands the discipline is filing, not filling in forms.

Route two: the homeowner registers it
This is the route where the record most reliably goes missing, because the person responsible for it has no reason to care until something breaks and no idea it matters at all.
Being straight about the current catalogue: none of the nineteen verified brands is set to the customer route today. The route exists in the product because it happens in the market, and because the near neighbours of it are already here. What is real in the catalogue is a set of decisions that only the homeowner can make, on a clock:
- Alpha ESS standard cover is five years. The ten year extended cover is a paid extension that has to be bought within 30 days of installation. Thirty days lands squarely in the handover window, and it is the homeowner's money.
- SolarEdge standard cover is 12 years and needs nothing. If the customer wants 20 or 25 years, the paid extension has to be bought within 24 months of shipment.
Operationally these behave like the customer route. Somebody has to raise it, explain it, get an answer, and record the answer, including when the answer is no. A homeowner who declines the Alpha ESS extension is a fine outcome. A homeowner who was never asked is a complaint waiting for year six.
How to stop it failing. Put the decision in the handover conversation, not in an email after it, and write down what they said. "Declined, 4 September 2026" is a record. Silence is not.
Route three: the commissioning app registers it
Four brands sit here: Sungrow, Tesla, SolarEdge and Enphase. Registration is a side effect of commissioning. Nobody fills in a form, and that is exactly the problem.
This is the most dangerous route precisely because it is the most convenient one. There is no task to forget, so there is no task to check. The app said it succeeded, or it did not say anything, and everyone drove away.
What actually has to be true on each of them:

Sungrow is the honest counterexample and worth stating plainly so nobody over corrects. Sungrow encourages registration but does not require it. The ten years runs from the installation date either way. EV chargers are the one exception, where the installer registers within a month.
How to stop it failing. Treat the automatic route as an assertion to verify rather than a job that is done. One minute at handover, opening the portal and confirming the unit appears, catches the entire class of failure.
What the three routes need from your process
The routes need different verbs, and using the same word for all three is how people learn to ignore the word.

Three different jobs, three different failure modes, one record per piece of equipment.
Where to start
Take your last month of installs and sort them by brand. For each brand, answer one question: which route is this, and what evidence exists that the route completed? You will find gaps. Most of them are recoverable, because most brands have conditions rather than deadlines, and a condition with no published deadline can usually still be met today.
