GoodWe's ten year warranty is five unless the inverter stays on SEMS
GoodWe has no registration deadline. What it has is a condition: the inverter must be connected to the SEMS portal and uploading generation data. Miss it and the term is five years instead of ten, and nobody tells you.

GoodWe has no registration deadline. Its ten year inverter term is conditional instead. The inverter has to be connected to the SEMS portal and uploading generation data, and a hybrid running a Lynx battery needs both the inverter and battery serials registered. Miss either and the term is five years rather than ten. There is no notification when that happens.
That is the finding from the GOODWE Limited Warranty for Inverter System, Australia and New Zealand, read on 28 July 2026. Check the current document for the model you installed before relying on it.
The shape of the problem
A deadline is a thing you can miss once. A condition is a thing that can stop being true at any point in ten years.
That distinction is the whole GoodWe story. There is no countdown to manage, no window to diary, nothing to file by a date. What there is, is a live state that has to hold: the unit is on the network, the network reaches the internet, and generation data is arriving at SEMS. All three, continuously, for a decade, in a house you visit once.
The consequence of the state failing is not a warning. It is a shorter warranty that looks identical to a longer one until a part fails in year seven and the answer comes back that cover ended in year five.
What has to be true
Two conditions, from the document.
| Condition | Applies to |
|---|---|
| Inverter connected to the SEMS portal with generation data uploading | Every GoodWe inverter |
| Inverter and battery serials registered at the GoodWe ten year warranty portal | Hybrids running a Lynx battery |
The second one is a discrete act you perform at commissioning and it stays done. The first one is not.

What breaks the SEMS connection
Ordinary domestic events, none of which look like a fault.
- The internet provider ships a replacement router with a new network name.
- The homeowner changes the wifi password.
- The router moves and the inverter is now out of range.
- The house sells and the new owner sets up their own network.
- The dongle or communication module fails and nothing on the display makes that obvious to a homeowner.
The homeowner sees a system that is still generating, because it is. Generation and reporting are different things, and only one of them is a warranty condition.
This is the same structural risk as Tesla, where the Powerwall has to stay connected to the internet and cover ends at 48 months rather than ten years if the connection drops and is not restored within 45 days of Tesla's written request. Two brands, two portals, one problem: a home network your business does not control is load bearing for a warranty you sold.
Why nobody notices for years
Three reasons, and they compound.
The failure is silent. Nothing changes at the property. There is no alarm, no letter, no shortened term printed anywhere the customer can see.
The consequence arrives late and lands on somebody else. A five year term instead of ten does not hurt anyone until year six at the earliest. By then the technician who commissioned it may have left, and the office has no reason to be looking at an install from six years ago.
The record is per job, not per unit. Most companies can tell you what they sold in a given month. Far fewer can produce a list of every GoodWe inverter they have fitted, with the serial, the customer and whether it is currently reporting. Without that list, there is nothing to sweep.
What the money looks like
Work through a GoodWe inverter that fails in year six on a system where the SEMS connection dropped in year three.
If the condition held, this is a parts claim. The ET Series carries ten years of parts cover and twelve months of labour cover, so at year six the parts come from GoodWe and the labour is yours. That is already a real cost, and it is one you can calculate rather than guess at, using the truck roll cost calculator with your own drive time, on site time and loaded labour rate.
If the condition did not hold, the term ended at five years and the parts are yours too. A replacement inverter and a fitting visit, absorbed by whoever the homeowner calls, which is you, on a system where nothing was ever technically wrong with the workmanship.
Note also that twelve months of labour cover puts GoodWe among the small group in this catalogue that pays anything at all toward labour. Most brands pay nothing. That makes the twelve months worth knowing and worth not overestimating: it covers year one, not year six.
The fix, in order
1. Register both serials at commissioning where a Lynx battery is fitted. This one is finishable. Do it while the details are in hand and store the confirmation against the unit, not in an inbox. See how GoodWe registration works for the fields the portal asks for.
2. Confirm the SEMS connection before you leave site. Not that the inverter has a wifi symbol. That the site appears in SEMS and data is arriving. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a condition you believe is met and one you know is met.
3. Tell the homeowner in one sentence. Your inverter has to stay connected to the internet, and if it stops, your warranty gets shorter. Then add: if you change your internet, tell us. Say it out loud at handover and put it in the document you leave behind.
4. Keep a list of every GoodWe unit, not every GoodWe job. Serial, address, install date, and the date someone last confirmed it was reporting. That last field is the one nobody has, and it is the only one that expires.
5. Sweep monthly. A named person, a recurring calendar entry, and a written outcome. Open SEMS, find the dark sites, contact them.
The good news, and it is genuinely good
GoodWe publishes no deadline on the SEMS connection. That means a condition which is currently unmet can usually still be met.
An inverter that fell off the network two years ago can be put back on this afternoon and the condition is satisfied again. That is not true of a dated window. Silfab registration missed at 180 days is missed permanently. Fronius Warranty Plus missed at 30 months from delivery ex works is gone. GoodWe is recoverable, which makes the backlog worth working rather than worth avoiding.
So take the last few years of GoodWe installs, put them in a list, and find out how many are dark. Every one you reconnect is a warranty term you just put back to ten years for a customer who did not know it had halved.
Where to check the rest of your fleet
The conditions differ by brand and there is no general rule, which is exactly why this needs to be written down per unit rather than remembered. Compare GoodWe against the other inverters you fit on the inverter warranty page, run your install dates through the warranty deadline calculator, and see what a GoodWe claim will actually ask for on the GoodWe claim page.
Claim Timer holds each of those conditions against the piece of equipment it belongs to, with the date someone last confirmed it. It does not connect the inverter to SEMS for you and it does not file the claim with GoodWe. What it does is stop a silent condition staying silent for six years.
Checked against
Warranty terms change and differ by country. Treat this as a starting point and check the manufacturer's current document before you rely on it.

Solar panel warranty explained: the three types and what each one covers
A solar system carries three separate warranties, and they are held by different companies. Here is what each one covers, how long it lasts, and which one you need when something breaks.
Warranty basicsHow long do solar panels last? The answer with a document behind it
Every other page answers this with an average somebody made up. The only enforceable answer is the term a manufacturer signed: 25 to 30 years on the panel brands we have checked, and 10 to 12 on the inverters.
Keep the serial, the photo and the date on every install
Claim Timer stores one record per piece of equipment, with the nameplate photo and the registration confirmation on it, so the claim has its proof already.
